South Australian Railways 500 class (diesel)

South Australian Railways 500 is a class of diesel locomotive operated by the South Australian Railways and built by their own workshops using English electric components, including the English Electric 4SRKT (500 hp) diesel engine. In 1975 the 500 class were transferred to the Australian National Railways. Most were scrapped in the 1990s, and the remaining locos in the ownership of AN were passed to Australian Southern Railroad who then became Australian Railway Group. One member remained with ARG in Western Australia.

Surviving members

• 508 is owned by GWA, Used by EDI Rail at Port Augusta as there shunter.
• 515 is preserved at the National Railway Museum (Port Adelaide) as their SG Shunter.
• 518 is owned by Gemcorail and is currently used as a broad gauge shunter at Islington workshops.
• 527 was owned by ARG after the split from GWA and was donated to Steamranger in October 2010.
• 532 is Owned by GWA, Is stored at the Onesteel Whyalla Steelworks was transfed there but had no seen much use.
